BTW (Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde) is the Dutch equivalent of VAT, charged on the supply of most goods and services in the Netherlands. The standard rate of 21% applies to most commercial transactions. The reduced rate of 9% applies to categories considered essential: food and non-alcoholic beverages, medicines, books and newspapers, art performances, hotel accommodation, and public transport. The zero rate applies to exports and intra-EU business transactions. The distinction between 9% and 21% is frequently misunderstood — restaurant food is taxed at 9% but the same food purchased as a luxury hamper may be taxed at 21%. This calculator handles both adding BTW to a net price and extracting the BTW component from a gross price, which is needed for expense reporting and invoicing verification.
