How Calorie Burn Is Calculated

This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values — a standardised measure of exercise intensity developed by exercise physiologists. A MET of 1 represents the energy used at rest. Running at 8km/h has a MET of 8.3, meaning it burns 8.3 times more calories per minute than sitting still.

The formula is: Calories = MET x weight in kg x duration in hours. A heavier person burns more calories performing the same activity for the same duration because moving greater mass requires more energy.
