Understanding Running Pace
Running pace is expressed as time per kilometre or time per mile — for example, 6:00 per kilometre means you run 1 kilometre in exactly 6 minutes. This is the most useful metric for training because it tells you how fast you are going regardless of the distance covered.
Elite marathon runners maintain a pace below 3:00 per kilometre. Recreational runners typically train at 5:00-7:00 per kilometre. A beginner completing a 5K race at 7:00 per kilometre finishes in 35 minutes. Use this calculator to plan your target race pace and predict your finish time.
